Carpets and upholstery represent a significant investment, and how they are treated between professional cleans largely determines how long they last. The good news is that most of what matters is simple and takes very little time.
Vacuuming frequency is the foundation. Soil in carpet is abrasive: every footstep grinds particles against the fibres, cutting them at the base and producing the matted, dull appearance people mistake for staining. High-traffic paths — entryways, hallways, in front of sofas — benefit from vacuuming two or three times a week. The rest of the room can wait for the weekly pass.
Slow down when you vacuum. A single fast pass removes surface debris only. Several slow passes in overlapping directions pull embedded soil up out of the pile, which is where the damage happens. It is genuinely worth the extra two minutes per room.
Spills are decided in the first minute. Blot, never rub. Rubbing pushes the spill deeper into the pile and frays the fibre tips, creating a permanently rough patch that attracts dirt afterwards. Press a clean white cloth straight down, lift, refold to a clean section, and repeat. Work inward from the edge of the spill so you do not spread it outward.
Avoid coloured cloths and paper towels with printed patterns — both can transfer dye into damp carpet. A plain white cotton cloth is the right tool, and keeping one under the sink specifically for this purpose is a habit worth forming.
Resist the urge to saturate a stain with cleaner. Excess liquid carries the spill down into the backing and the padding beneath, where it wicks back up to the surface days later as a larger ring than the original mark. Light application, blotting, and patience beat heavy treatment every time.
Upholstery follows the same principles with one addition: check the manufacturer's cleaning code before applying anything. A W code means water-based cleaners are safe, S means solvent only, WS means either, and X means vacuum only. Using water on an S-coded fabric causes permanent watermarks that cannot be reversed.
Rotate cushions regularly so wear distributes evenly, and keep upholstered furniture out of direct sunlight where practical — UV fades and weakens fabric fibres surprisingly quickly through a south-facing window. Combined with a professional clean once or twice a year, this routine keeps soft furnishings looking right for far longer.
